"The more you understand the ingredients, the better cook you will become."
-Martin Yan
These are common ingredients found in local cuisine. You can find these ingredients readily available in your local supermarket.
Panko
Panko is the name for Japanese-style breadcrumbs. These dried, toasted flakes are larger and coarser than western-style breadcrumbs. They are used to give deep-fried foods, such as tonkatsu, deep-fried Japanese pork cutlet, a crunchy coating.
Unlike some batter or breadcrumb-coated foods, panko does not taste greasy adter frying; it retains its crisp texture even after standing. Use panko as you would bread crumbs. Toss panko with your favorite seasoning and sprinkle over casseroles for a different look and texture.
Panko is available in various sizes plastic bags. Transfer the contents of an opened package to a self-sealed plastic bag and store in a cool, dry place. It will keep for several months.
